Trail Description
The trail starts high up in the medieval village of Santa Maria in Tiberina (687m) perched on top of the Umbrian hills overlooking the Tiber valley. As we cycle along the ridge we have stunning views in every direction, with the tortured crags of La Verna (Tuscany) to the north, Monte Acuto (Umbria) to the south and the spectacular mountains of Le Marche straight ahead to the east. After about 45 minutes cycling we turn off the main ridge and follow a path down a picturesque spur that slopes gently into the Tiber valley. The track passes through pine forests, meadows full of wild flowers (in spring!) then later through oak woodlands as it descends to the valley floor. After one and a half to two hours of cycling we arrive at the little village of Lerchi just outside of which lies the Macri country house - our lunch stop off point. At Macri country house you can have a light lunch or a full 4 course Meal before carrying on the trail. Cycle Middle Italy customers are offered an all inclusive 15 euro deal consisting of a three course meal with wine and coffee plus afternoon use of the pool. After lunch the trail passes across a field and briefly follows the river Cerfone before joining the majestic upper Tiber which flows down from the Apennine mountains to Rome. We follow the river along a beautiful shaded single track trail until reaching the village of Lama where you can take refreshments in a bar until your transport arrives to take you home.
